Tarapoto is a beautiful city located in the region of San Martin (whose capital is Moyobamba) in the border of the forest of Peru, founded on August 20, 1782 by the Spanish bishop Baltazar Jaime Martínez of Compagnon and Bujanda. It is a city that is characterized for its radiant tropical climate, its happy people and its great tourist attraction.

To arrive to Tarapoto there are two options. The first one is a bus trip, that from Lima lasts 23 hours it travels through the North pan-american Highway and then the Fernando Belaúnde Terry. The trip from Lima through land, in spite of being long, is very entertaining due to the landscaping wealth since it travels through the 3 natural regions of Peru (coast, mountains and forest). If you desire a shorter trip you can choose the second option, a plane trip, that lasts only 45 minutes from the International Airport Jorge Chávez of Lima towards the Airport Commander FAP Guillermo del Castillo Paredes.

In Tarapoto there are many ways to enjoy its kindness as a tourist destiny. If you like adventure sports, the City of the palm tree offers large options to practice activities as boating, whitewater rafting in the fast, expeditions to the “mount” and walks. If your option is the ecotourism, in Tarapoto you will find lots of natural destinies in which you will be able to enjoy most beautiful landscapes and the great diversity of flora and fauna that characterizes the Peruvian forest. Some of the most important destinies are: the Ahuashiyacu falls, the lagoon of Sauce, the river Shilcayo and the tourist centers of the Cumbaza river.

The city offers also a great variety of foods and typical beverages. In the case of the cousine, we have the classical Juanes, Tacacho with Jerky, the soup Inchicapi, among others. As for beverages we can enjoy the exoticism of the R.C., Chuchuwasi, Uvachado, Indanachado and many more marinated ones.

It is well known around the world, that there’s definitely truth in the importance of mineral waters for good health and in helping to restore and improve oneself from illnesses that confront us with the passing of time. One of the most important Natural Baths in the world, rich in all these talked about minerals, is located in northern Peru, in Cajamarca and is more commonly known as the Incan Baths.

The baths are located 6 kilometers (3.7 miles approximately) east of Cajamarca. Not only do the Incan Baths have a very important place in Peruvian history due to it being the precise location where Atahualpa was at, at the moment of the Spanish arrival; but also its importance is cemented in Peruvian culture because during the Incan Empire, only the most intimate circle of the imperial royalty was allowed access to these baths, as well as some of the military generals that were preselected personally by the Inca.

It’s name in Quechuan is “Inti Puquio,” which means “Sun Source;” named this way due to the high temperatures of the waters. In recent calculations, the baths see an influx of around 4 million tourists every year, coming from all corners of the world and making the Incan Baths the main attraction of Cajamarca. In this circuit of thermal waters you’d find the Poza de la Inca (the Inca’s Pool), which measures four square meters with a depth of 1,7 meters. According to history, this pool is where the Inca Atahualpa rested before meeting with the Spanish.

Healing Properties

The Incan Baths has thermal waters that are over 70 degrees Celsius (160 degrees Fahrenheit, approximately). In several studies conducted to test the kinds of minerals found in these waters, it’s been found that the waters have a chemical composition that possesses therapeutic qualities that can treat osteoporosis and the nervous system.

The heat of the water is a result of its nearness to volcanic hotspots, that remain hot yet inactive, and can remain so for an innumerable amount of time. These hot waters are a natural source for sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium and iron. Its medicinal waters are especially effective towards the treatment and prevention of rheumatoid pains, and skin issues.

This place, aside from truly having a gorgeous natural landscape and plenty of tourists lodgings, also has alternative cures for nearly every known health issue. The water surfaces from the volcanic rocks and it’s healing properties, tested by science, are known world wide.

The Pass of Huaylas is a narrow valley stretch in the Andes mountain range, within the department of Huaraz. Throughout most of trajectory as you pass through this valley stretch, it’s possible to see the gleaming white snowy peaks of the mountains, the Santa River passing by, as well as country landscapes and greenery that expose nature at its best, and will surely dazzle anyone who visits.

This valley is surrounded by the Negra and Blanca (Black and White) mountain range. It’s possible to tell them apart, because White Mountain has snowy peaks such as the well known Pastoruri, located in the Huascaran Park; while on the Black Mountain there is never any presence of snow.

Thanks to the geographical characteristics of this area in Peru, de Pass of Huaylas is an excellent venue to try out (if you’re a beginner) or to continue practicing (if you’re a seasoned sportsman) adventure sports such as: mountain climbing, trekking, boating, scaling and mountain biking among so many other options. All of these offer an experience full of adrenaline, fun and entertainment!

A Few Nearby Towns

Using the natural course of the Rio Santa as a reference, we found several towns and villages that are near it, and that offer great experiences due to the simple fact that their traditions and way of life are quite distant from that of the noise and stress that you may find in the city. Some of these towns are: Recuay, Huaraz (which is the capital of the Ancash region), Carhuaz, Yungay and Caraz.

Recuay: Is the first town of the valley. The architecture here has the colonial style of old, grand houses along with more simple structures with clay and tile roofs intermixed throughout. Here you’re able to find the mineral and thermal waters of Conococha, Ucuschaca, Pachacoto, Pumapampa, Burgos and Utuco. That’s not all, Querococha and Conococha lakes are both here as well.

Huaraz: Huaraz is the most important city in the Huaylas Pass and is also the capital of Ancash. This city is the starting point for all the excursions that are offered and that cover the whole of the Huaylas Pass.

Carhuaz: The name of this town comes from the words “cca huash” meaning “yellow.” Yellow, because of the bright yellow color of the flowers that bloom on the broom plants that cover the adjacent mountains. Architecturally, the homes here have maintained a Colonial and Hispanic style.

Yungay: This town is known for its main attraction – a grand sculpture of Christ with his arms eternally open and outstretched. Yungay is a town which suffered from a landslide of rocks and stones and boulders, resulting from the snow accumulation of Huascaran, in 1970. Nowadays, its a blessed town that commemorates that fateful date.

Caraz: Is a town known for its sweet confections made of fruits, and for being the capital of the Huaylas province. It is a town of narrow streets, that preserves old structures of colonial and republican times alike, which by some miracle or other withstood the sudden seismic attacks of an earthquake on May 30th, 1970. These are only some of the attractions found at the Huaylas Pass. They promise to offer you a mixture of entertainment and adrenaline, along with magical and spectacular local traditions.

Chinese food in Peru is very different to international Chinese food. It is popularly known as Chifa (name by which the restaurants that offer this food are also known by), voice that comes as an interpretation of the phrase the chinese traditionally use to say when food is ready: Chi and Fan (“eat” and “rice” respectively). The Chifa is a food with such an influence among the peruvian people that it is considered as part of the traditional peruvian cousine.

The history of Chifa date back to mid XIX century, when numerous families from China mainly from the locality of Canton) migrate to Peru to work in the coastal country houses. These people were known in Peru as “culies” and were subject to working environment that mirrored slavery, even with limited service. These, done with their contracts, moved to urban zones and initiated food and commerce related businesses (also the traditional figure of the chinese grocery was born). Years later, the seasoning of the cantonese food was confused with the raw materials and peruvian techniques giving origin to this delicious mix known these days as Chifa.

The years went by and at the beginning of the XX century the first chifas “appropriately named” started to emerge. The first one of them was inaugurated in the year 1921 and it was named Kuon Ton (Cantonesse) and based on an article “Arte Culinaria Del Celetes Imperio: Gastronomía China Conquista Los Paladares Criollos”, it was precisely in this restaurant that one of the most commonly used chifa terms was created: “Tay pá”, that refers to a dish very diversed and well served named same as it is prepared.

The Chifa is clearly a gastronomic patrimony of Peru. The chinese kitchen that is made in our country is probably the best in America and only in Lima is so popular that we calculate around 5000 chifas. Another city known for its chifas is Huacho, located to the north of the capital.

Three ex-students of Pacific University are convinced that today the Internet has revolutionized the way in which people find information about a product or service. And this phenomenon does not escape the tourism sector, since today most users prefer to plan their trips, reserve tickets, consult maps on line about the destinations that they would like to visit, instead of going to travel agencies.

From this came the proposal to create Viva!. The name of an on line application that may be accessed from any iPhone, Blackberry, Palm, cellular 3G or conventional computer and that will have personalized tourist information about different locales and tours that may be taken in Cusco.

Antonio Beingolea, one of the ex-students, says that in order to access the application, it will only be necessary to join the page www.viva.com.pe and from there you will have access to a GPS, a virtual map of the city of Cusco and tourist information segmented by specific areas: the city’s cultural attractions, hotels and lodgings, trips and activities, restaurants and cafes, bars, pubs and discotheques, art and entertainment, shopping and services, events and festivals.

In this manner, the tourist that finds him/herself anywhere in the world may program his/her trip according to his/her interests. And once he/she is in Cusco , he/she will be able to utilize the application as a permanent consultation method without the necessity of having to be connected to the Internet.

Beingolea points out that to initiate his operations, he will find a main team of announcers, that will be the owners of the restaurants, pubs and other establishments. They will pay between US$250 and US$300 a year to advertise in the Viva! page, all the relevant information about the attractions and services of their locales. “The users may also be able to download discounts and promotions offered by our announcers so that they may be able to know the impact that the application generates”, he points out.

Parallel, two or three people will dedicate themselves to continually revise the activities, festivities and events in Cusco organized by Mincetur, central employers and other cultural associations that may include themselves in the Viva! page.

And even though we are dealing with a service that principally brings information about Cusco, as the page gets better known, it will be incorporating more tourist information about Arequipa, Puno, Lima and other attractions in the south of Peru. Likewise, we will position Viva! in Google as the main reference page for the tourist who wants to visit Cusco.

The tourist who is only looking to find basic information about restaurants and other locales will be able to access the Viva! page for free. But if you want more up to date information about the activities in Cusco, you will pay US$1,49 for the application.

The flag beverage of Peru , the noble Pisco, has many ways it can be consumed. Traditionally, the Pisco Sour is the most populat cocktail and it is diffused as much inside as outside of the country, nevertheless, there is another pisco native preparation that has many followers: the Chilcano. The Chilcano of Pisco is a simple drink that is characterized for its delicious flavor and resfreshing qualities.

This drink is consumed generally by young people during the warmest seasons of the year during social or nocturnal meetings. The simplicity of its preparation makes it the preferred drink by many hosts, and many bars have developed their own variant. The Chilcano is prepared combining generous measures of Pisco, rubber syrup, Ginger Ale and lemon juice in a glass with abundant buckets of ice, it is adorned then with slices of lemon. Some experts mix it also with the increasingly more scarce cherry liquor.

In Lima we can find many places that offer it on their menu. The varieties are immense, but on this occasion we will touch upon some of the more famous ones. One of them is the Pisco Bar, located in Miraflores, in the street Cantuarias. This is a welcoming place to have a few drinks after the office or to celebrate a social event. Their classic Chilcano is very good, but the main attraction are their creative varieties such as the Chilcano of Chili Pepper, Chilcano of Coke, Chilcano of Anís and many more other ones.

In the Bar Inglés del Hotel Country Club, A traditional bar in one of the oldest hotels of San Isidro, located in front of the Golf of San Isidro, we can enjoy one of the better prepared Chilcanos of the city, moreover it will be able to delight us with its luxury and history

Euromonitor International, globally recognized business by its market research, revealed today that the tourist industry of Latin America will go up again with force in the next year it will gain growth in Mexico, Peru, Chile and the Caribbean, being Brazil the indisputable star.

This growth will prompt the expansion of regional airlines, being in the middle of a war of costs and prices the encouragement of the use of airplanes will be greater to that of buses.

The most favored aeronatics business would be TACA and LAN Airlines. Nevertheless, in Brazil the Azul airline, would reach a 50 percent increment in its operations.

The tourist boom in Brazil would not be this year alone but also thanks to the execution of the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.

On the other hand, Mexico after the blow that was left to its economy by the influenza, will recover its place, thanks to an aggressive advertising campaign, a reduction of costs and the weakening of the peso.

A main market in this strategy will be the Canadian market, there is a growing number of travelers of that area that decide to travel toward the Caribbean and South America.

The flow of tourists to the region will coincide with a growing number of trips from the region to other regions, especially to United States.

Said tendency will be favored by structural economic conditions, explained the consultant in a report delivered to DPA. One of them is the general fall of the dollar against the Latin-American economies, concluded Euromonitor International.

At approximately 65 km. from the city of Lima, the valley of the Rimac River is located near the town of San Jerónimo de Surco in the province of Huarochirí. With its local church of that dates back to colonial times, the local waterfalls, and the archaeological sites, this town is abundant with attractive tourist sites.

Tumbapaccha Falls are mere short walk from the Huanano Machay caves, which are pre-Inca constructions of the Huarpa Ayacucho culture. Arriving to the site, one can feel the magic and mystique of the Tumbapaccha waterfall. Standing near falls, a person will feel small in comparison to the heaving beauty of nature.

The 20-meter-high waterfall is surrounded by beautiful-looking natural landscapes, which in turn are bountiful through the valley.

Alongside the banks of the impressive landscape and the raw natural force of the waterfall, there are various restaurants.

For this kind of trekking through the valley, it is recommended to wear comfortable thin clothes and shoes. Also, trek lightly between the trails and rough roads as heavy weight hinders mobility and can be dangerous.

It is also advised to bring a drinking bottle or container, preferably for water. Remember, there are no shops in nature!

Due to the nearby city of Lima, it’s possible to visit the falls in the course of one day. Surely the pressures of city life can be overwhelming, so why not get away from the city and run into the arms of nature? With this in mind, the Tumbapaccha cascade is no doubt the best option.

Because of the close proximity to the city, you can plainly plan a trip to Tumbapaccha during the week. Within days, you can spread the word to friends for a one-day trip of adventure and extreme excitement. Just grab a backpack, wear something comfortable, and go out and enjoy nature!

In order to survive and spread their culture, the men and women of northern Peru have been characterized throughout history as a group of people that were consistently overcoming northern Peru’s harsh terrain. Located a few kilometers from Cajamarca, Cumbemayo is a fine example of the peoples’ ability to triumph over the hostile environment.

The Cumbemayo Ruins are located at the base of Cumbe Hill. There, the people of Cajamarca had built aqueducts carved into rock and decorated with various glyphs. The aqueducts brought water from the hill’s melting snow thus supplying a population with adequate water. These aqueducts were built around 1500 BC and are considered one of the oldest manmade structures in South America.

How Were They Built?

The ancient people of this region had noted that rainfall was scarce. In turn, they needed to seek new ways to supply water to their livestock and families. Their solution came in the form of volcanic rock shaped into a zigzag pattern and placed around the hill. This structure guided the water from the melting snows from the hilltops to the people down below.

Within this structure, the ancients built a religious shrine. There, priests worshiped a stone sculpture in the form of a human head that leads into a cave filled with still undeciphered glyphs. Additionally, shrines were erected at every major section of the aqueduct as offerings to the gods.
Cumbemayo is an esoteric region that tourists can enjoy. Given the history of the aqueducts, the nature encompassing them, and the engineering of volcanic rock, drinking this water – rich in minerals – gives the body not just a refreshing physical sensation but a spiritual one as well.

How to Get There

The only way to get there is through an hour-long bus ride from Cajamarca.

Located 31 kilometers from Tarma, in the department of Junin, we find what is considered to be the deepest cave in South America. The cave of Guagapo, whose name in Quechua means “Tears of the All-Powerful”, is a rocky formation 2,000 meteres deep of which the opening to the outside is 20 meters high. Inside are stalactites and stalacmites, forming a small drizzle that falls over the heads of tourists who venture into this natural wonder.

Within the walls of the cave, we find not only thousand year-old rock formations, but also proof of the existence of a community which once lived inside, since we can see the cave paintings representing typical animals of the region: the llama, the guanaco, the snake, and some hunting scenes as well.

When we enter into the interior, we will be able to see a subterranean stream that, upon emerging from the rock, forms small cascades toward a moor covered by natural vegetation that lives on the water from the stream. After a 100 meters of walking, the path separates from the stream and from this point on, you need a tourist guide to tell you where to walk.

The cave is divided into two sections and the adventure begins as we climb a bit in order to continue our hike in search of the “tears of the all-powerful”. After ascending this stretch and walking approximately 300 meters into the interior of the cave, we arrive on dry ground and can see the stalactite and stalacmite formations on the roof, which with drops of water have formed an entire forest of rock for us to admire.

Why is it called “The Tears of the All-Powerful”?

There is a legend that the villagers tell as to why this name was given to this place. In the time of the Incan expansion, the local people knew that in this cave there were caverns which could serve as a refuge to them should there be an invasion. So, when the armies of Incan warriors arrived, the men from the village hid their wives and children here in order to save them from a possible massacre.

The families waited for the return of the warriors for a long time, but the Incas were too strong and the men never returned. The women mourned their deaths and, out of fear, never left the cave, becoming transformed into rock after many years.

So if today we are in this place, and close our eyes, we will be able to hear their cries in the drops of water.

Peru is known for its scenic beauty and beautiful national reserves, one of these being the National Reserve of Titicaca. This natural area is made up by the Titicaca lake, the artificial man-made islets and the cultivated farming zones, all of which are located within the Department of Puno. Its most visited spots are the floating islands of Uros as well as the Amantani and Taquile islands, which are the two largest islands on the lake.

This reserve is part of a system offering a save haven for natural and ecological areas and is protected by the state of Peru using the assistance of the Ministry of Environment. It was officially recognized as a National Reserve in 1978. It should also be mentioned, that Titicaca Lake is the highest navigable lake in the world and aside from this, is also a place where various cultures emerged and to this day continue to dwell by the lake’s shoreline.

Within the multitude of activities that are available, and aside from the usual tourist tours, it’s possible to take a local marsh boat and take a spin around the lake, or to rent a paddle boat and leisurely make your way around. There are also sail boats available for use in open public areas, sport fishing (for Silverside fish ‘pejerrey’) activities in the Coata River canal, and plenty of opportunities for bird watching as well as the other species whose habitats are within the zone.

The Uros

Within the reserves compound, there lives a community of people called the Uros, and they’re considered to be the oldest group of residents still in the region. They tend to make their homes on the reed islands within the lake. These islands on Titicaca are one of the most visited and central tourist spots on the reserve. The economy of this village, is solely based on the income that comes in from tourism, fishing, hunting and artisanal crafts.

Flora and Fauna

The lake houses a great amount of bird species, fish and amphibians. Within the groups of fish that make their habitat in Titicaca, there is the Suche, Mauri and Orestia among many others, native to the area. In terms of the flora of the area, the most well known are the cattails (totora) or the marsh plants, as they are the main components of the floating islands and the boats on the lake.

Archeological Remains

At the reserve, we can also find some archeological remains. For example, in the Capachica Peninsula, there are remains here and there, of Incan tombs. As well as in the Chucuito Peninsula where you’d find funereal tombs and a stone raised ceremonial temple used by the Tiahuanaco culture. Likewise, in other cities like Chucuito, there are fertility temples, and in Taraco there have been found the remains of figures carved into stone, which can also probably be attributed to the Tiahuanaco culture. The visit to the lake is not only an experience where you’ll learn about the customs and lifestyles of other cultures, but also you’d be able to enjoy beautiful scenery the likes of which you’ve never seen before. Due to the location of the reserve, it’s an ideal place to get a little ecotourism done, adventure touring is quite popular as well, and of course there’s plenty of opportunity to go about investigating and experiencing some cultural exchange.

For the fans of birdwatching, a journey to the Peruvian forest is very important to be able to give free rein to their ecological inclinations and to see how the birds unfold in their natural environment. By their gaudy colors and the way they devise their croaks, the Peruvian birds are very prized among the experts of this subject.

One of the birds that are more sought in the Peruvian forest is the Rooster of the Rocks, the national bird of Peru. It is described as a small ball of fire that crosses the greenish forest, due to the intensity of the red color of its plumage and to the small crest on its peak. As opposed to its partner, the female goes unnoticed by its reddish brown plumage. It is considered by the specialists as a typical case of “sexual diformity“, term that describes the difference of appearance that exists among the types of species.

The Rooster of the Rocks is the size of a small chicken and it feeds from a great variety of wild fruits, that grow abundantly in the forest of the oriental side of the Andes. Due to this a large quantity of food exists in this region, the male one satisfies its alimentary needs very quickly, dedicating the remainder of its day to a complex social contest to attract the females inside a flock.

To attract them, the Rooster of the Rocks will dance on a branch and will seek to be differentiated from the remainder by their song. Once it obtains its partner, the female will be entrusted alone with the incubation and care of the pigeons

The self-sufficiency of the females

The females of the Rooster of the Rocks are characterized for not needing the male one to comply with the work of the preservation of the species. This itself is due to the fact that nature is wise and it has differentiated them notably from the male. By their gaudy colors, to be near the nest would attract the attention of their predators, such as the eagles and the snakes.

In view of this, their dark reddish brown plumage is confused with the trees where they nest and only seek the male when they desire to reproduce. Consequently, the unique thing that the male can offer to the females is their ability as dancers and singers.

Nevertheless, this does not occur in any other place. The scientists have determined that the Rooster of the Rocks only performs its mating ritual in determined areas of the forest, called leks. In this place, the female will observe them thoroughly and will evaluate its artistic gifts. Besides, it will choose the Rooster that returns promptly to the dancing session, since this indicates that it can avoid predators easily and survive one more dayin the forest.

Those that gather these two conditions will be elected to pass its genes to the following generation of Rooster of the Rocks.
