At approximately 65 km. from the city of Lima, the valley of the Rimac River is located near the town of San Jerónimo de Surco in the province of Huarochirí. With its local church of that dates back to colonial times, the local waterfalls, and the archaeological sites, this town is abundant with attractive tourist sites.

Tumbapaccha Falls are mere short walk from the Huanano Machay caves, which are pre-Inca constructions of the Huarpa Ayacucho culture. Arriving to the site, one can feel the magic and mystique of the Tumbapaccha waterfall. Standing near falls, a person will feel small in comparison to the heaving beauty of nature.

The 20-meter-high waterfall is surrounded by beautiful-looking natural landscapes, which in turn are bountiful through the valley.

Alongside the banks of the impressive landscape and the raw natural force of the waterfall, there are various restaurants.

For this kind of trekking through the valley, it is recommended to wear comfortable thin clothes and shoes. Also, trek lightly between the trails and rough roads as heavy weight hinders mobility and can be dangerous.

It is also advised to bring a drinking bottle or container, preferably for water. Remember, there are no shops in nature!

Due to the nearby city of Lima, it’s possible to visit the falls in the course of one day. Surely the pressures of city life can be overwhelming, so why not get away from the city and run into the arms of nature? With this in mind, the Tumbapaccha cascade is no doubt the best option.

Because of the close proximity to the city, you can plainly plan a trip to Tumbapaccha during the week. Within days, you can spread the word to friends for a one-day trip of adventure and extreme excitement. Just grab a backpack, wear something comfortable, and go out and enjoy nature!

In order to survive and spread their culture, the men and women of northern Peru have been characterized throughout history as a group of people that were consistently overcoming northern Peru’s harsh terrain. Located a few kilometers from Cajamarca, Cumbemayo is a fine example of the peoples’ ability to triumph over the hostile environment.

The Cumbemayo Ruins are located at the base of Cumbe Hill. There, the people of Cajamarca had built aqueducts carved into rock and decorated with various glyphs. The aqueducts brought water from the hill’s melting snow thus supplying a population with adequate water. These aqueducts were built around 1500 BC and are considered one of the oldest manmade structures in South America.

How Were They Built?

The ancient people of this region had noted that rainfall was scarce. In turn, they needed to seek new ways to supply water to their livestock and families. Their solution came in the form of volcanic rock shaped into a zigzag pattern and placed around the hill. This structure guided the water from the melting snows from the hilltops to the people down below.

Within this structure, the ancients built a religious shrine. There, priests worshiped a stone sculpture in the form of a human head that leads into a cave filled with still undeciphered glyphs. Additionally, shrines were erected at every major section of the aqueduct as offerings to the gods.
Cumbemayo is an esoteric region that tourists can enjoy. Given the history of the aqueducts, the nature encompassing them, and the engineering of volcanic rock, drinking this water – rich in minerals – gives the body not just a refreshing physical sensation but a spiritual one as well.

How to Get There

The only way to get there is through an hour-long bus ride from Cajamarca.

Located 31 kilometers from Tarma, in the department of Junin, we find what is considered to be the deepest cave in South America. The cave of Guagapo, whose name in Quechua means “Tears of the All-Powerful”, is a rocky formation 2,000 meteres deep of which the opening to the outside is 20 meters high. Inside are stalactites and stalacmites, forming a small drizzle that falls over the heads of tourists who venture into this natural wonder.

Within the walls of the cave, we find not only thousand year-old rock formations, but also proof of the existence of a community which once lived inside, since we can see the cave paintings representing typical animals of the region: the llama, the guanaco, the snake, and some hunting scenes as well.

When we enter into the interior, we will be able to see a subterranean stream that, upon emerging from the rock, forms small cascades toward a moor covered by natural vegetation that lives on the water from the stream. After a 100 meters of walking, the path separates from the stream and from this point on, you need a tourist guide to tell you where to walk.

The cave is divided into two sections and the adventure begins as we climb a bit in order to continue our hike in search of the “tears of the all-powerful”. After ascending this stretch and walking approximately 300 meters into the interior of the cave, we arrive on dry ground and can see the stalactite and stalacmite formations on the roof, which with drops of water have formed an entire forest of rock for us to admire.

Why is it called “The Tears of the All-Powerful”?

There is a legend that the villagers tell as to why this name was given to this place. In the time of the Incan expansion, the local people knew that in this cave there were caverns which could serve as a refuge to them should there be an invasion. So, when the armies of Incan warriors arrived, the men from the village hid their wives and children here in order to save them from a possible massacre.

The families waited for the return of the warriors for a long time, but the Incas were too strong and the men never returned. The women mourned their deaths and, out of fear, never left the cave, becoming transformed into rock after many years.

So if today we are in this place, and close our eyes, we will be able to hear their cries in the drops of water.

Peru is known for its scenic beauty and beautiful national reserves, one of these being the National Reserve of Titicaca. This natural area is made up by the Titicaca lake, the artificial man-made islets and the cultivated farming zones, all of which are located within the Department of Puno. Its most visited spots are the floating islands of Uros as well as the Amantani and Taquile islands, which are the two largest islands on the lake.

This reserve is part of a system offering a save haven for natural and ecological areas and is protected by the state of Peru using the assistance of the Ministry of Environment. It was officially recognized as a National Reserve in 1978. It should also be mentioned, that Titicaca Lake is the highest navigable lake in the world and aside from this, is also a place where various cultures emerged and to this day continue to dwell by the lake’s shoreline.

Within the multitude of activities that are available, and aside from the usual tourist tours, it’s possible to take a local marsh boat and take a spin around the lake, or to rent a paddle boat and leisurely make your way around. There are also sail boats available for use in open public areas, sport fishing (for Silverside fish ‘pejerrey’) activities in the Coata River canal, and plenty of opportunities for bird watching as well as the other species whose habitats are within the zone.

The Uros

Within the reserves compound, there lives a community of people called the Uros, and they’re considered to be the oldest group of residents still in the region. They tend to make their homes on the reed islands within the lake. These islands on Titicaca are one of the most visited and central tourist spots on the reserve. The economy of this village, is solely based on the income that comes in from tourism, fishing, hunting and artisanal crafts.

Flora and Fauna

The lake houses a great amount of bird species, fish and amphibians. Within the groups of fish that make their habitat in Titicaca, there is the Suche, Mauri and Orestia among many others, native to the area. In terms of the flora of the area, the most well known are the cattails (totora) or the marsh plants, as they are the main components of the floating islands and the boats on the lake.

Archeological Remains

At the reserve, we can also find some archeological remains. For example, in the Capachica Peninsula, there are remains here and there, of Incan tombs. As well as in the Chucuito Peninsula where you’d find funereal tombs and a stone raised ceremonial temple used by the Tiahuanaco culture. Likewise, in other cities like Chucuito, there are fertility temples, and in Taraco there have been found the remains of figures carved into stone, which can also probably be attributed to the Tiahuanaco culture. The visit to the lake is not only an experience where you’ll learn about the customs and lifestyles of other cultures, but also you’d be able to enjoy beautiful scenery the likes of which you’ve never seen before. Due to the location of the reserve, it’s an ideal place to get a little ecotourism done, adventure touring is quite popular as well, and of course there’s plenty of opportunity to go about investigating and experiencing some cultural exchange.

For the fans of birdwatching, a journey to the Peruvian forest is very important to be able to give free rein to their ecological inclinations and to see how the birds unfold in their natural environment. By their gaudy colors and the way they devise their croaks, the Peruvian birds are very prized among the experts of this subject.

One of the birds that are more sought in the Peruvian forest is the Rooster of the Rocks, the national bird of Peru. It is described as a small ball of fire that crosses the greenish forest, due to the intensity of the red color of its plumage and to the small crest on its peak. As opposed to its partner, the female goes unnoticed by its reddish brown plumage. It is considered by the specialists as a typical case of “sexual diformity“, term that describes the difference of appearance that exists among the types of species.

The Rooster of the Rocks is the size of a small chicken and it feeds from a great variety of wild fruits, that grow abundantly in the forest of the oriental side of the Andes. Due to this a large quantity of food exists in this region, the male one satisfies its alimentary needs very quickly, dedicating the remainder of its day to a complex social contest to attract the females inside a flock.

To attract them, the Rooster of the Rocks will dance on a branch and will seek to be differentiated from the remainder by their song. Once it obtains its partner, the female will be entrusted alone with the incubation and care of the pigeons

The self-sufficiency of the females

The females of the Rooster of the Rocks are characterized for not needing the male one to comply with the work of the preservation of the species. This itself is due to the fact that nature is wise and it has differentiated them notably from the male. By their gaudy colors, to be near the nest would attract the attention of their predators, such as the eagles and the snakes.

In view of this, their dark reddish brown plumage is confused with the trees where they nest and only seek the male when they desire to reproduce. Consequently, the unique thing that the male can offer to the females is their ability as dancers and singers.

Nevertheless, this does not occur in any other place. The scientists have determined that the Rooster of the Rocks only performs its mating ritual in determined areas of the forest, called leks. In this place, the female will observe them thoroughly and will evaluate its artistic gifts. Besides, it will choose the Rooster that returns promptly to the dancing session, since this indicates that it can avoid predators easily and survive one more dayin the forest.

Those that gather these two conditions will be elected to pass its genes to the following generation of Rooster of the Rocks.

On one of the voyages of Italian traveler, Antonio Raimondi, who dedicated part of his life to traversing the Peruvian Andes in search of new species of plants and animals, he described Huascarán as a mountain of ice that keeps an imposing vigil over the towns that develop within the Huaylas Alley. Actually, that same sensation experienced by the scientist is the one that many tourists who have been able to visit the snow capped peaks of the Huaraz Cordillera Blanca (White Mountain Range) have felt when seeing how the morning sun illuminates the highest tropical snow capped peak in the world

In order to preserve it, the Huascarán National Park was created in 1975, whose main function is to protect the flora, fauna and geological formations which have been shaped through millions of years of evolution and now find themselves in danger due to global warming. Declared, in the same year, as Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the Park is abundant with forests of native trees and local fauna, such as the High Andean deer, the raccoon and the puma.

Around 80 thousand national and foreign tourists visit the Park every year in order to see the snow capped peaks that they can climb, such as Pastoruri, and to see how nature has created places where ice and greenery live together harmoniously. Furthermore, diverse picturesque villages make our visit enjoyable, showing a part of their culture through succulent Andean foods and recuperative soups for those coming back from climbing.

If Huascarán, who rises far above 6 thousand msnm (meters above sea level), is not scalable, the aficionados of Alpinism look upon it with respect and admiration since from Pastoruri point one can see an impressive view of the imposing snow capped peaks that look down on us from the heavens.

Located in the eastern sector of the Cordillera Blanca (White Mountain Range), the Conchucos Alley is a series of small valleys that accommodates a large amount of towns through 400 kms. In it we can find dreamlike and traditional landscapes and magnificent vistas of an Andean landscape crowned by the snow of its hostess

The best way to reach Conchucos Alley is taking the eastern route, at an elevation of 163 km. from the road that unites Huaraz, the capital of the department of Ancash, with the city of Pativilca. From there, we will walk 68 km. ascending the mountain slopes until we reach the mountain range. If the climate is favorable, we can observe majestic snow capped peaks towards the left of the route like Cashán and Uruashraju.
These snow capped peaks are the antechamber for a natural wonder: the Querococha lagoon. Its blue waters are next to the snow capped peaks of Pucaraju and Yanamaray, part of the Huascarán National Park.

Once observing them, we will cross one of the highest tunnels in the world: the Kauish tunnel, located at 4178 msnm, in order to later descend towards Chavín de Huántar.

The region’s capital

The Chavín de Huántar ruins are the entranceway to Conchucos Alley. In it we can find the vestiges of one of the first civilizations of Peru, the Chavin culture.

More than 2500 years ago Chavín de Huántar was an important center of religious pilgrimage for the inhabitants of ancient Peru, who would visit a stone oracle and leave offerings in order to obtain favors. Due to this, it exercised notable influence over all cultural and political activities in the Central Andes.

The flower paradise

Exiting from Chavín de Huántar, we find the Rio Mosna Valley, also known as the magnolia paradise, since they grow in every garden. Surrounded by crops and by towns dedicated to agriculture and animal husbandry, we find the town of Huari.
Here we find an example of the typical architecture of a town from the sierra: narrow and inclined streets with adobe houses with ridged roofs. It is a good place to rest and eat something at the central plaza, which always has important commercial activity.

Leaving from here, the route continues the course of the Huaritambo River, through all the central villages until reaching the picturesque city of Chacas, the seat of the religious missions of Italian Salesian priests who do social work in the town. Further downward, returning towards Huaraz, we find other landscapes that will be discovered by tourists who reach these lands.

It is true that Lima is a noisy and polluted city, however, nearby, at 74 km to be exact, there is an impressive place that should be included in any relaxing visit. The Antankallo cataracts are found in the Rimac valley, department of Lima, Huarochiri province, Matucana district.

In order to enjoy the impressive landscapes offered by this paradisiacal place, one has to reach Matucana, capital of the province of Huarochiri. Parting from there and after walking for 2 hours, one reaches the exuberant waterfall. During the journey to the falls one can enjoy incredible landscapes, practice ecotourism, cross bridges, observe rock formations like the Christ and, furthermore, be enjoying the splendor of the falls as one nears it.

Within the attractions of Antankallo one finds:

Arca Lagoon: Located at 4650 m.s.n.m. (meters above sea level) is the beginning of the enchanted lagoon.

Enchanted Lagoon: at 3500 m.s.n.m., this lagoon was created by the population in order to irrigate the fields. Upon it one can appreciate flying condors and, in good climes, one can appreciate the snow capped mountain peaks of Ticlio, the highest point in Peru. As the story goes, two groups of people agreed to create two irrigation ditches in order to irrigate the fields, however, arguments began that prevented its being carried out. Each group started to create an irrigation ditch on its own. When finished, they decided to once again get together in order to reach an agreement. In the middle of the discussion a mysterious, gleaming man appeared on horseback who tells them that they should not argue since neither one will be able to achieve what is planned without him. He asked for the prettiest maid in the town in exchange for creating the lagoon and the population agreed and complied with the promise. According to the story, on nights of the full moon, one can see a woman brushing her hair by the shores of the lagoon, but it is best not to stay there since many ended up at the bottom of the lagoon trying to follow the beautiful woman.

If you don’t have much time and cannot ask for a vacation, think about this destination near Lima which will only require a weekend to visit and you will, furthermore, be able to leave behind the stress and worry that Lima offers day to day.

Since very old times, Huánuco has always been considered as “the relief of the travelers”. This is due to its strategic position inside the national geography that makes it the point of traffic between the coast and the amazon. This region is located in a fertile valley, which can only be accessed through the mountains, it is seen by the tourists as an impressive and green landscape.

To Huánuco we can arrive through a branch of the Central Highway that goes toward the north of the Oroya. In the middle of so much mountain, Huánuco is the entrance to the forest of Peru.

Near the paso of Cárpish, to 2700 msnm, taking the paved highway that leads to Tingo María, we find a paradise of flowers and plants that fill the valley with their fragance. In the middle of these flowers its emphasized the Andean orchids and among them, one stands out that is very abundant and special: the epidendum.

This flower is a type of terrestrial orchid that climbs for the trunks of the trees to grow over other plants. They do not need many nutrients to grow, for which they can be found on the oriental lands of the slope of the central andes. It flourishes yearlong, for which it is known as wiñaywayna: always young.

Natural beauty

Because in Huanuco exists the fog forests, all the plants fight for obtaining some sun. Due to it, on the trees we will be able to observe not only the wiñaywayna, but also the bromelias, begonias and heliconas. Nevertheless, the small orchids are the ones that attract more visitors, due to their exoticism and fragility.

They are not only a beautiful flower, but a wonder of nature. Due to its need for food, these orchids have developed tree roots to be capable to collect more nutrients from the soil; also these roots support them as they rise for the trunks of the trees, taking advantage of the residues of other plants.

Because this type of flowers and due to its beautiful landscapes, Huánuco is considered to be “the relief of the travelers”.

At more than 3900 msnm, to six hours toward the east of Lima, exists a plateau of volcanic origin located on a high mountain where we could find a white rock carved by the settlers of these lands around the year 100 B.C. This sculpture, called “The monument to humanity”, was built by the men of a culture called Masma, what today is Marcahuasi, it developed and coexisted with a beautiful landscape without equal.

Attractions of Marcahuasi

It is an invaluable combination of art and geology where we find a great model of living beings that go from humans to animals, passing for mythological animals. These sculptures are located in a specific zone, the Bosque de Piedras, where we will also find sculptures that resemble a Prophet, an assembly of seals and the Monument to Humanity.

We can also observe in Marcahuasi the Laguna Negra, a cocha – temporary lagoon that is formed from the rain – that can only be appreciated in the winter months, it has the magic property to change the personality of the people who drink from its water.

Esoteric Importance

The great attraction of this area, besides the beautiful landscapes of the Peruvian mountains always offers, are the esoteric properties that arriving to Marcahuasi gives us.

Many tourists have affirmed that to visit the Bosque de Piedras has renewed them of vital energy, since to be surrounded by these supernatural forces has given them sufficient will to make a change in their lives. The stones contain a great content of quartz, generating the same energy that would be obtained from visiting Machu Picchu.

Also, the walks that are accustomed to be organized – very coveted by the lovers of trekking and mountaineering – are for the tourists a way to purify the spirit, since the evils and toxins are eliminated from the body.

On the other hand, in the night, in the moonlight and the bonfires, the tourist guides make us participate of a mystical ceremony in which we find our soul by consuming San Pedro, a cactus that will cure us of any illness that we might have.

It is considered by the specialists as a typical case of “sexual diformity”, term that describes the difference of appearance that exists among the types of species.

If our first impression when arriving at Lima is of a modern city with a frenetic rhythm, besides being a place rich in history and culture, we also think if there are other types of elements that would be interesting to see. For example: nature.

Lima was founded in the bed of the valley of the Rímac River and at 5 leagues from the Pacific Ocean, which is why we may intuit that there still exists some natural places to escape the noise of the city. And so it is: there are four main, natural tourist spots existing in the capital of Peru.

The Villa Swamplands

Located in the Chorrillos district is a zone that has been preserved since 1989. It is recognized, furthermore, as a conservation place for aquatic birds that pass through here on their migratory voyage northwards.

A visit there is interesting due to the fact that it is the only protected, natural area that exists within the metropolitan area of Lima, which gives a great scientific and educative value since as the city has grown, the nature of this area has slowly adapted until it has found its own equilibrium.

The wetlands of the Villa Swamplands is integrated with the basin of the Rímac River, which surfaces its subterranean waters. Furthermore, it is home to 155 species of birds and another important amount of flowers, reptiles and wild animals.

The Lachay Hills

Located in the Huaura district, two hours from Lima, the Lachay Hills National Reserve is the main ecosystem of coastal hills in the department. It was established as such in 1977 in order to restore and conserve the wild flora of the hills that serve as a natural resource for the capital’s water supply.

It counts with a singular biological diversity as well as, ruins of Pre-Colombian cultures and rupestral art, which indicates that Lima was inhabited by Peruvian man for more than three thousand years.

The Nor Yauyos – Cochas

Reserve It is unique in its genre because of its beauty and its breadth. It was created in 2001 and its function is to protect and conserve the high basin of the Cañete and Pachacayo river, which encompasses an immense ecosystem of very particular flora and fauna, in which rural communities and nature coexist.

These communities have developed forms of social organization in order to administer the resources that nature gives it, as well as, nature forming beautiful landscapes that beg to be photographed.

One of the greater tourist attractions of the Valley of Colca, the deepest canyon of the world, is the lookout of the flight of the Condor, considered by the Inca as a representation of the spirits of their beloved beings that observe them from the height of the skies.
Inside the zone of the Colca, the best place of observation of these birds is found to 3800 msnm, in a window known as the Cross of the Condor, where with a little patience and luck we will be able to sight three birds plowing the skies with velocities that reach 200 mph.
To arrive here is recommended to do it in the morning hours, due to that with the light of the dawn these birds leave to do their journey in search of food and for observe their domain from the heights. Usually they leave from the left of the lookout window, where their nests carved in the walls of the mountains are found. Likewise, if it is lucky, the condors will be able to fly over directly the lookout windows, attracted by the group of people that joins there to observe them.
Also the flight of other birds in this valley can be observed, like the kestrel, the wandering hawk or the mountain partridge.

What is the best time to visit this place?

The Canyon of Colca can be better enjoyed between the months of May and October, because the river water becomes more navigable, by the absence of torrential rains, becoming a focus for the practice of boating and kayak.
To be able to arrive to the river, you should descend from the district of Cabanaconde toward the south and follow the instructions of the guides, who are qualified to assist you at any moment.
Besides, the condors will cheer up your walk between 9:30 and 11 a.m, or from 5 to 6 pm, which are the hours in which they leave to seek food.

If in the summer we seek sun and beach, we only have to go to Máncora to find another jewel of the Peruvian coastal nature. In Trujillo, to only six hours of Lima, is one of the places that we can visit if what we want is to get bathed in sunlight and to enjoy a good time playing sports or just enjoy a dreamy sunset.

To arrive to Trujillo, you we will head towards the north Panamerican expressway or a direct flight via Lan between Lima and Trujillo. Upon arriving, we can note that the city offers the tourist various number of options, that range from beaches to architectural remainders of great importance, as is Chan Chan, because of its ecology and gastronomy.

Three are the most visited beaches in Trujillo, that are day by day turning out to be an interesting destination to enjoy the beaches of golden sand and perfect waves to practice surfing: Huanchaco, Buenos Aires and Las Delicias.

The beach of Huanchaco is the best-known northern spa, in line with Máncora in Piura. The tourists keep amazed to see that the settlers maintain alive the traditions of their ancestros and they fish in a crafty way: with nets and with hobbyhorses of reed. Huanchaco is used to receiving tourists, in this we will be able to find hotels and very well cared for restaurants with high quality of service.

The beach Buenos Aires is a lot more solitary than Huanchaco, due to that its located a little more far away from the city. Nevertheless, due to that condition, the tourists with greater purchasing power can take the luxury to rent rustic houses near the sea, if they are available. Furthermore, for the younger crowd, there are more affordable lodgings accommodations that allow to save money and at the same time enjoy nature.

The Cañón del Colca is not the only one in existence in Arequipa. Discovered a little more than twenty years ago by some adventurers, Cotahuasi, located in the province of La Unión, is a mixture of the rich Pre-Colombian heritage of Peru with the tradition of the existing towns around its foothill. Formed by the Cotahuasi river, which originates in the Huanzococha lagoon, at more than 4750 msnm (meters above sea level) in the Southern Andes is the Cañón de Cotahuasi which is an impressive geographic structure between the Coropuna (6425 msnm), and the Solimana (6093 msnm) mountains.

Studies made by English scientists between 1991 and 1994 determined that the Cañón de Cotahuasi is superior in depth to that of the Grand Canyon in the United States and of the one at Colca.

It is an impressive geographic phenomenon in which visitors may find rock forests, spikes, lagoons, thermal springs and an enviable bio-diversity: viscachas, vicunas and condors that live near Solimana.

The Sipia Falls

One of the most visited attractions is the Sipia Falls, located in the El Toro district, one hour by car from Cotahuasi. The landscape before our eyes is marvelous, since the closer we get to it we can see how the riverbed narrows towards the entrance of the falls and drops 150 meters, splashing against the rocks at the base which, when mixed with the morning sun gives us the gift of a beautiful rainbow.

Snowcapped Solimana

The Solimana volcano is one of the most preferred by Alpinists who come to these spots searching for adventures in extreme sports. It is widely visited between the months of April and November when conditions for securely scaling are favorable and at its peak the entire Cotahuasi canyon may be observed.

Thermal Springs of Luicho

17 kilometers from Cotahuasi is located the Thermal Springs of Luicho tourist complex, which have acquired certain renown due to its medicinal and relaxing properties. The waters spring from the adjacent hill at a temperature of 38ºC and it is recommended for those who suffer from rheumatism, arthritis, stress and others.

Currently, the regional government of Arequipa has remodeled this locale in order to accommodate the large amount of tourists that come here to get healed.

How to get there

The company Sipia Tours offers a complete tour that takes us to the most important places in this Peruvian geographic jewel, specializing in trekking aficionados and photographers who wish to photograph the beauty of the natural places.
