
Costa Rica is a country that benefits from both Caribbean and Pacific coasts, offering a wide variety of beaches that varies in its function according to its particularities.
Wildlife reserves , coral reefs and idyllic landscapes are part of the charm of these beaches. Let’s see what the Costa Rican central and north Pacific coast offers:
The Nicoya and Guanacaste Peninsula (North Pacific)
The area of northern beaches is the seat of the country’s main tourist attractions. These beaches are all related with small hamlets and populated centers. The different complexes, which extend the length of the north Pacific coast, offer a variety of sports and diverse activities such as sportsfishing, diving, surfing and golf.
Main beaches:
Coco Beach:
This beach, half-moon shaped and with palms along its whole coast, extends more than 1 km. It is a small fishing village very popular in the country and the pelicans have the habit of standing on the fishing boats docked on the bay, which causes fascination among the tourists. Furthermore, there is no scarcity of entertainment in its surroundings: rodeos, beauty contests and other events are organized in its surroundings during high season (November-March).
Flamingo Beach:
Also known as “White Beach” due to its brilliant sand. Also more than one kilometer in length and half-moon shaped hugging the sea; it is famous for its sportsfishing.
Grande Beach:
Together with Tamarindo, it is part of the “Las Baulas” National Park, extending for more than 45 hectares and the nesting area of the gigantic tortoises in danger of extinction. Every year, in May, they come to the park’s sands to lay their eggs. Tourists may observe this event under the watchful eye of the Tico park rangers.
Tamarindo:
It is a large beach visited by surfers that serves as an important coastal resort. Just like Grande Beach, it enjoys a rich ecosystem in wildlife. It is an excellent beach to combine marine sports with excursions through the national park.
Central Pacific :
It is Costa Rica’s most visited destination due to its proximity to the capital and for being the home of the “Manuel Antonio” National Park. The beaches are known for its rough waves that extend to the steps of the mountains which welcome surfers in search of extreme sensations.
In reference to the beaches, the central Pacific seaside extends from Quepos to Manuel Antonio and Jaco through a system of resorts.
Main Beaches:
Manuel Antonio National Park:
They are 682 hectares of beautiful beaches with fine, clear sand, a coral reef and a jungle filled with noisy wildlife; which captivates the wide majority of visitors.
Jaco Beach:
It is considered Costa Rica’s most animated tourist center and the attraction of the most developed countries, thanks to its concentration of hotels, international restaurants, surfing stores and travel agencies.
Hermosa Beach:
Honoring its name, it extends 10 km more towards the south along the Pacific coast. It attracts lots of surfers due to its international surfing championship that is organized every year.
