Braulio Carrillo National Park

Dr. Braulio Carillo National Park’s namesake was an illustrious Costa Rican man.  He was and remains a historic national treasure.  Dr. Carillo became the third elected president of Costa Rica, and he completely understood the importance of ecological conservation.

In an effort to conserve the forest and its amazing biodiversity, in 1978 the rainforest officially became a national park.  With 44.000 hectares to its name, the park is Costa Rica’s biggest.

Located roughly 20 Km north of San Jose, the Braulio Carillo National Park is located in one of Costa Rica’s least accessible areas.  Its terrain is made up of a chain of mountains of volcanic origins.

The park’s vegetation is thick and green.  It’s a humid forest with rain all year round.  It’s terrain changes in accordance with rainfall, drainage, and other variants.

The forest is filled with century-old trees, lots of palms, heliconias, and bromeliads.  Above all, the forest has over six thousand types of plants and trees.

Rich in wildlife, especially birds; abundant in monkeys, toucans, eagles, tapirs, jaguars, cougars, deer, porcupines, and sloths; and lizards which come in all shapes colors and sizes. The park is home to over 500 types of birds, and over 135 types of animals. Among this diversity are some of the most venomous Central American snakes and the most marvelous birds like the Quetzal.

Two roads cross through the park: the “Dr. Braulio Carrillo” connects San Jose to Limon. Its route passes through the tunnel “Zurquí,” through Guápiles, Guácimo and Pococí. It also provides access to the National Park Tortuguero. The other is the Interamerican Highway to the Atlantic coast which connects Siquirres and Turrialba with San Jose.

The park protects innumerable springs and bodies of water within the central valley. Visitors will bear witness to amazing water falls, rivers, mists, and much more unforgettable wonders of nature.

Without a doubt, the most extraordinary thing that visitors will encounter in this park is the orange currents of the Rio Sucio. The river derives its name from the volcanic sulfur deposits from the Irazu volcano.

The park can be enjoyed in its entire splendor during the months between December and April.  This is Costa Rica’s dry season.

In order to enjoy the parks roads and trials, remember to wear clothes suitable for hot weather.  Throughout the park, there are three ranger stations. However, they’re not really accommodating or comfortable to stay in. This in turn seems like a blessing when weighed against the clear and splendid magnificence of Costa Rica’s ecological crown jewel.
