It is located in the south pacific seaboard, near the the border with Panama between Punta Uvita and Punta Piñuela, in the District Cortez del Canton Osa, Province of Puntarenas, Created by executive decree on December 14, 1989. The Park has an extension of 110 land acres and slightly more than 5,000 marine acres. It was created to assure the maintenance of habitants critical for the reproduction and spawning of many marine species and to preserve the productivity of the biological communities that inhabit the coastal zone. It protects various environments such as rocky beaches, sandy beaches, cliffs, islands, rocky reefs and organic reefs, among others. One of the most important environments of the area are the organic reefs, commonly called coral reefs. There are formations of corals, algae corallines and sponges, that consolidate their structure, which is porous with 50% of empty space. As they grow, channels are formed and cavities that communicate among them, it is a factor that permits the co-existance of great variety of species. These are forest on the maritime floor. In these marine ecosystems we find the most common species of crabs, worms, lobsters, algae; as well as several species of fish, sponges and mollusks as the squat. Also, two species of reptiles have been reported; the green iguana and the cherepo. Among the sea birds we find the frigates, white ibis, pelicans and brown birds. A geological formation that brings a lot of attention to investigators and visitors is the Tombolo of Punta Uvita (formed by the natural sands on the crest of rocks that unite the head of the Tombolo with the coast). Visible perfectly from the air, resembles the tail of a whale, thus explaining the name of the national park. Entirely a natural monument a paticular stamp of this paradise where the whales mate. Another one of the reasons that make the park a special place. The visitor can sail and enjoy seeing the arrival of the hunchback whales while they crossing to the south hemisphere and then back to the north. But, attention; if that is not sufficient, at any moment you will see, that dolphins swim on the side of the yacht, giving you an experience in a spiritual level difficult to pass on. In the National Park Marino Ballena, you will be able to personally verify the magnificence of mother earth, creator of its own sanctuaries; of which, we, its inhabitants should be tireless protectors. Remember that it also has the power to take the authority that it once gave us.
