Grande Beach and Tamarindo Beach share the same bay and are separated by the “Las Baulas” river in the National Park of the same name. It constitutes one of the best kept secrets of the film, economic and legal elite of the world. It is known that its sands have been visited by stars of such caliber as Mel Gibson and Leonardo Di Caprio, members of international royalty such as the Prince of Jordan (who visited Costa Rica a few weeks ago) among many others.

Perhaps it is due to the difficult land access and the distance and road conditions (a little more than 5 hours by car and 8 by public transportation from San Jose) or due to the fact that it is part of the National Park (The “Baula” is an enormous tortoise that deposits her eggs only at Grande Beach and some other beaches in this area of the Pacific Ocean, but not in Tamarindo), these beaches have managed to stay protected despite its constant battle with its well-deserved fame and the price of its lands in the worldwide real estate market.

The best way to reach it is through direct flight from San Jose-Tamarindo, approximately 45 minutes in duration. I had the good fortune of knowing these paradisiacal beaches, thanks to a temporary work contract at one of the hotels that operate in this zone: Hotel “Cala Luna” (located next to Barcelo Langosta Beach, at the southern point of the bay where Tamarindo Beach ends and Langosta Beach begins). but I reached its beaches almost 9 hours after an infernal trip from the “Alfaro” bus terminal at San Jose.
I will explain; there are two ways to reach Tamarindo Beach by land: by Liberia, Guanacaste; at 4 and half hours from San Jose. Or by Nicoya, also Guanacaste; but at 3 and half hours from San Jose. The difference rests on the fact that from Nicoya you have to cross the “Puente de La Amistad” Bridge of Friendship). Continue to Santa Cruz and from there to Tamarindo; a total of 6 hours.

By Liberia you stop at practically all the remaining populated areas, some with a score of houses; in roads lacking asphalt, in terrible states and temperature above 30º C.
I took the 7 a.m bus that went through Liberia. I reached Tamarindo Beach at 4:20 p.m. With my head spinning, my body aching and anxious to finally reach my destination. It was really worth it.
The bay had lovely turquoise water, divided by a calm river, of transparent waters that can easily be crossed while swimming in order to land on Grande Beach. The experience of walking on its white sand until reaching Langosta Beach enjoying the blue of the Pacific in all of its immensity until reaching sunset and marveling at the Via Lactea as night fell on a sky dreamed of for weddings and honeymoons. It is perfect for almost all aquatic sports, sanctuary of surfing and windsurfing. And its nightlife will surprise you.
You can stay at Cala Luna, Barcelo, Langosta Beach, Capitan Suizo or Tamarindo Diria. If you plan on visiting Costa Rica, include Tamarindo Beach in your destinations. You will not regret it.
