Because of them, it is considered one of the world’s top destinations for adventure and extreme sports – like rafting. One of the most challenging water rafting circuits to rafting enthusiasts is located exactly here at Apurimac River; which in Quechuan (the most widely spoken indigenous language in the Americas) means, “God who Speaks.”
The River Although the Nile River is considered the longest river in the world, the Amazon being the largest, begins here, rising from the glacial melt waters of the Nevado Mismi at 5,597 meters (18,362 feet) above sea level from Arequipa. It is the Apurimac River that sits at the base and is therefore the source of the world’s largest river system. Flowing north through the Cusco region, over prairies, mountains and canyons, one can find the waters of the Apurimac sprinkled with small waterfalls, streams and hundreds of rapids. A completely unique and one of a kind experience not to be missed, and offered as a packaged deal by River Explorers for 3 days/2 nights.
The Itinerary Upon arrival in the Cusco, you’ll find morning expeditions heading off at 8am with direction towards the Apurimac. First stop on the excursion is in Anta, where we’ll stock up on food and supplies and say “until later!” to civilization. From then on it’s a steady decent towards the river, trekking through mountains, small brooks, and plenty of small authentic-looking Andean towns until finally reaching Wallpachaca. Here is where your river rafting adventure begins and will unravel for the next few days, experiencing and conquering rapids categorized at levels III-IV.
Nights are a great time to socialize and integrate with your group whilst taking part in the various dynamic storytelling sessions and special barbecues at offer. The company will provide meals, boat, safety jackets, a safety guide always at hand, and camping supplies. Those interested, should plan to bring flashlights, sun block, bug repellent, and whatever necessary items needed for sleeping comfort. On the other hand, one should also consider acquiring the proper insurance to cover for any accidents, loss of life, and/or any other unforeseen events requiring immediate medical attention.
