Antioquia is a beautiful village located about an hour and a half south of Lima in the central area of the Lurín River Basin, 43 kilometers away from Cieneguilla. It is a nice get away for that people looking for a way to escape from Lima’s cold and humid weather during the winter season.

It can be reached by car through the paved road that leads to Huarochiri, passing by villages like Chontay, Sisicaya and Nieve-Nieve. These places don’t have gas stations. Therefore, carry all the necessary supplies, gas and water.

If you don’t have a car you must first get to the main roundabout in Cieneguilla and for a low fare take a taxi or a collective taxi bound for Antioquia.

What will you find there?

The reason why Antioquia has become famous among Limeans and local travel agencies is that the inhabitants have decorated its houses with colorful paintings of flowers, horses and birds. The village now is full of joy, energy and happiness in its streets and the view of its painted houses from Antioquia’s Plaza de Armas (main square) is something to remember. The new environment invites the traveler to stay there and to visit again.

In these villages (excepting Cieneguilla) there are not all basic tourist services like restaurants or hotels (this is why it is so attractive), modest restaurants can be found in the highway. In the Antioquia Main Square a restaurant and restrooms can be found. The local authority is trying to facilitate places especially prepared to eat and public restrooms.

There are grocery stores where you can buy delicious and freshly made fruit juices. The village inhabitants grow their fruit and vegetables on the surrounding land and, in the absence of hotels, some of them rent rooms or houses to the visitors adding more rustic charm to the place.

New experiences

In The Plaza de Armas you can ask for local guides, they arrange trekking tours and circuits in Antioquia as well as excursions to places with the best views along the river Lurin.

People in Antioquia, with help from non-governmental organizations, offer visitors high quality sweets and marmalades. They are delicious so next time you are there, make sure you buy some and take many pictures of the painted houses. Undoubtedly, it is a unique experience full of life and color.
