“The Taj Mahal appears to be the incarnation of all things pure, of all things saintly, and of all things unhappy. This is the monument’s mystery.”- Rabindranath Tagore.
The greatest monument to love in the whole world. The Taj Mahal is a spectacular combination of constructions located in the city of Agra in India, on the bank of the Yamuna River. Its construction was undertaken between the years 1631 and 1654, directed by the Muslim emperor Shah Jahan in honor of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, with the objective of housing their remains. History tells us that Mumtaz Mahal was the favorite wife of the emperor. She bore him 13 sons, but died giving birth to the fourteenth. Shah Jahan wanted to errect a monument to her as a sign of his pain from her loss, and organized the construction of the mausoleum and the complex in which it is located. The Taj Mahal comprises a complex of buildings dominated by an immense mausoleum made from white marble, where the bodies of Mumtaz Mahal and her husband the emperor rest. The complex is so large that there are many legends surrounding its edification. It is said that Shah Jahan was so satisfied impressed by the work’s beauty that he had the hands of the workers responsible severed, so that they could never again construct a monument of equal beauty. The Taj Mahal is one of the most appreciated tourist attractions in India. Its beauty and majesty are such that only a few years ago it was included among the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the New Open World Corporation (Macchu Picchu in Peru was also included on this list), and in 1983 it was named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
