Initially Cancun was planned out to become as good as (or better) than Acapulco- a successful and very popular city- and in no time at all it became an important touristic hub. Located in the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun has in the eyes of the world, developed in a short amount of time into a a high class resort escape.
Currently the city is divided into two main areas: the city of Cancun (city center or ciudad central) and the area of the island which is connected to the hotel/resort zone. Between the two, the second (ie. the resort isle) is better known for its touristic indulgence, as it’s more prepared to offer better attractions in terms of lodging, commercial centers, markets, shopping, beaches and tourism in general. What to do in Cancun For those of us that would like to spend our time enjoying nature, this can be done on the beaches, of course…but it’s also possible to go about searching for seashells, whale watching, playing with dolphins, looking for pearls, lobster fishing, or just observing all the marine life that inhabit the area, such as the marlins and turtles.
You’d also find that Cancun is a kind of heaven on earth for a water sport enthusiast. You’ll find diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, water skiing, and parasailing among others, at offer. There are also plenty of yacht and cruise excursions to choose from, which are very popular. If you dream of swimming with dolphins, take a visit to Isla Mujeres, this island is less than a hop skip and a jump away, and you’ll get to swim with the cute, friendly, charming dolphins. Water sports and nature are not the only choices here. If what you want is to relax and spend time with your family, we recommend that you visit the Acuario Interactivo de Cancun (the Interactive Aquarium), where a multitude of colorful, amazing sea life awaits to be discovered. For kids there’s a splendid adventure game where they’re able to act as Indiana Jones, in the Maya Ventura labyrinth. They’ll look for hidden treasures while avoiding obstacles and roadblocks that may try to get in their way. This is really a fun and educational way for children to spend some time! Last but not least, in the midst of so many tourist attractions, we recommend that you not forget to visit these places: The Kohunlich Ceremonial Center, which has its own ancient Mayan Sun Temple, and is of super importance in Cancun because of its history. The INAH Museum (National Institute of History and Anthropology) where you’re sure to learn a thing or two about Mexican culture, Precolumbian to modern. La Plaza de Toros where traditions continue with the bullfights that take place every Wednesday. These encounters, many times, may even seem like an enchanting orchestrated dance between man and bull. There is an art to this, that can be worth taking a look at.
