First Hand Look at The Death Mountain

The Death Mountain

San Isidro del General along with with Ciudad Neilly, make up the two most important populated points of the Perez Zeledon Province, located on the south end of Costa Rica. San Isidro del General is known as “La Ciudad de las Mujeres” (city of women), because of the women left behind after the mass exodus of men that has occurred when the men (husbands, fathers and sons) of this town migrated to the United States in search of work and better opportunities for themselves and their families. The town can be reached after crossing the so called “Death Mountain” (Cerro de la Muerte) located inside of the protected area of the “Tapanti” National Park- its highest peak being at an elevation of 3.500 meters above sea level.

This great big block of a mountain takes a part in the list of attractive tourists locations, and is one of the most visited by nationals and foreigners alike.
Picking up on leads from interviewed clients belonging to a Costarican commercial firm, we took route and headed to the General’s Valley (Valle del General) after passing by Cartago, on the Interamerican highway. Via this route you’ll be heading towards Paso Canoas and the Panama border. A drive that should more or less take 3 and a half hours.

Our arrival at the park was received with a great show of cloudy weather and heavy fog which made road visibility quite difficult and driving conditions much slower and erring for the side of safety with headlights on and a good distance between all vehicles.

The Tapanti National Park is part of the Talamanca mountain range. The vegetation growing there is very dense and as we move up higher and higher in elevation, its easy to see how much of its territory is still untouched virgin land. On a high plateau, the cold and humidity increases, which is the perfect climate for the flora which in some instances hints at its pre-historic origins. Great big centenary trees, bromelia, bushes and shrubs with gigantic leaves, flowers with vibrant colors make a contrast with the greyish tint of the lichens and moss. One can guess that the fauna is also very diverse in its species and the beauty of Quetzal can be seen in fleeting glimpses throughout the jungle area.

Throughout the entire trip, the visitor will always be able to find restaurants serving typical Costarican food, hotels nestled in the mountains, market areas selling local crafts, nurseries displaying beautiful plants and flowers, small and medium sized fish farms dedicated to cultivating trout and where an individual can do their own fishing and then enjoy the taste of their catch whether it’s cooked on a grill, fried or with a garlic sauce. And not to be forgotten, there are  also plenty of strawberry and blackberry farms spread throughout your journey.

Death Mountain also gives those visiting it, the chance to enjoy walks on its paths and protected zones. Here it’s quite possible that you’d look about and find yourself gazing at incredibly scenic beauty and natural realism.  On its highest peak, you’d be able to see how the sky divides itself when it meets with the different air currents: the trade winds originating from the Northern hemisphere and the Pacific current coming up from the Southern hemisphere.  One is dense and heavily populated with clouds, while the other has a clean and clear blue summer sky.  The bravest of the brave can even dare to venture into the various brooks and streams, and take a dip into the ice cold waters (temperatures in the park can drop to below 3 degrees during the dawn hours).

If you do end up visiting Costa Rica, don’t miss out on the chance to make a tour to these parts.  Take a coat with you, but if you intend to get to the Valle del General, take clothing with you that will keep you fresh and cool, as the city of San Isidro del General is known for it’s blistering hot temperatures.

It’s like leaving an ice cooler directly into the oven and vice versa!

Pura Vida!
