Fitness Centers:

In Lima you have a wide range of choices. I would say finding a gym here is about the same as finding one anywhere in the world. Most importantly is the distance from home to the gym because if it’s too far you’ll never want to go. The gym is supposed to be something you attend a few times a week so keep it as close as possible. The second aspect to consider is your budget. For example Gold’s Gym (www.goldsgymperu.com),a chain which as 10 locations around Lima, can cost anywhere between $30-80/month depending on the package. Like almost everything in Lima prices tend to be negotiable when in person. I would suggest finding a gym you like and sitting down with a representative there to see how they can make it work for you. I once negotiated a pass that would allow me to enter the Gold’s Gym 40 times over a period of 6 months which was no where to be found on any website or advertisement. I did this by showing up and telling them how often I would go and what amenities I would be using at their gym. Sometimes a monthly package includes a bunch of stuff you would never use so tell them and see what they can do for you.

Besides private gyms you can also try clubs. In Lima there are a few private clubs, which can be interesting depending on your needs. For examples there is a Club Terrazas (http://www.clubterrazas.com.pe/), Club de Regatas (http://www.clubregatas.org.pe/), and Centro Naval (http://www.centronaval.org.pe/). Each of these clubs has their own special touch and most offer family packages.  You might also want to try the big hotels such as the Marriott (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/limdt-jw-marriott-hotel-lima/) or Lima Golf Club (http://www.limagolfclub.org.pe/)

Alternate option to hotels or hostels in Lima:

When staying in Lima the options are endless all depending on your needs for that trip. The most common option for tourists coming through Lima would either be to stay in Hotels or hostels.  But over my years of traveling back and forth to Lima I found another option, which has worked our great for me, and everyone I have suggested this to. Try renting a private home such as a condo/apartment. The prices range anywhere from $30/night for a 1 bedroom up to $200/night for a luxury 4 bedroom condo. What is great about this option is you can really get a feel for the Lima lifestyle by having your own private home for a few days. You can also get yourself a housekeeper who will cook and clean for you during your stay.  Not common to a travelers as it is to a Peruvians. Here are some websites, which offer short-term rentals.

Surely there are plenty of other websites, however, I have listed the ones I know best and believe they are the most reliable and honest.
Remember that in Lima everything is negotiable. Most apartments require a minimum of one nights stay so even if you aren’t staying as many nights as they request I suggest that you try.  I am sure you will be able to work something out with them.   Usually when booking an apartment the renter will require a deposit to ensure you will actually show up, this is a very normal procedure anywhere in world when renting. Usually upon arrival to Lima you have to leave the renter a security deposit, which will be given back to you at the end of your stay. Again this is very normal and sometimes negotiable. If you need airport pick-up, laundry service, house cleaners or temporary cell phone you can always ask the person whom you are renting from. In my experiences, I have found renting a condo to be very practical and safe!

To give you an idea of how convenient staying in a condo can be here is a situation I experienced first hand.

Last year 4 friends and I rented a condo during the holidays, on the Malecon in Miraflores for $100/night. The condo was on the 8th floor with its own private elevator entry. It had 3 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms, a large living room, kitchen, laundry room and, my favorite, a nice balcony overlooking the sea with colorful sunsets every night. When 5 people can share rent for $100/night to stay in a luxury condo with an ocean view, how you could get a better deal anywhere else in Lima. Even if we were to stay at a hostel we would have paid around the same price. An important note to remember, always keep in mind the time of the year you decide to travel as it can have a huge impact on pricing everywhere you go.
