Today’s airports have become an important factor in evaluating and deciding where to take a holiday and how accessible these places may be. For this same reason, architects have begun to collaborate creatively, to make airports that are not only a place to arrive and depart from, but also a tourist attraction in their own right.
To show off these impressive airports, Travel & Leisure magazine has compiled a list that ranks the most impressive and majestic of these airports, based on the opinion of experts in architecture.
The following is the result: 1. Terminal 3, Beijing International Airport, China. Inaugurated in time for the Summer Olympic Games of 2008 held in Beijing, the inside is in the shape of the Dragon and extends 3 kilometers (1 mile approximately) in length. It was designed by: Foster + Partners. 2. Menara Airport- Marrakesh, Morocco. The new style of Arabic architecture. It was designed by the E2A studio of Casablanca and finalized in 2008. The ceiling has 72 pyramids made of photovoltaic cells which generate electricity from light.
3. Malvinas Argentina Airport- Ushuaia, Argentina. The Malvinas Argentina is the most southern airport in the world. It’s located in the southern tip of the South American continent. It’s location allows allows for closer proximity for airplanes flying over the mountains and/or the Beagle Canal. 4. Terminal 4 – Barajas Airport, Madrid, Spain. It’s undulating ceiling of fine woods is a well known image in this airport of Madrid. Yearly there are approximately 35 million travelers and passengers passing through this terminal and using its services. It was designed by the architect Richard Rogers and inaugurated in 2006. 5. TWA Terminal at the JFK Airport- New York, United States This one’s a classic, built in 1962 and designed by Eero Saarinen. The TWA terminal at JFK has in recent times gained new-found popularity. 6. Sondika Airport- Bilbao, Spain The Sondika is also know as “La Paloma” (the Pigeon) and it’s design is accredited to Santiago Calatrava- created ten years ago in the year 2000. It’s a sculptural, majestic open space, filled with bright light. 7. Kuala Lumpur International Airport- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysa The airport was a project assigned to Kisho Kurokawa a Japanese architect. It’s a vibrant and eclectic airport, with Arab cupulas and parabola shaped ceilings, gilded columns and polychromatic woods.
