Often times when we travel, we feel the need to disconnect ourselves from the internet and in a way, from our daily lives back home as well. But all in all, due to security it’s actually better to keep connected. The following are seven important tips to keep in mind while traveling. They are specific in making sure we maximize the internet’s potential to act as a safeguard, communication device, agenda and planner, as well as an informational tool. 1. Safeguarding important Data through E-mail use. It’s super vital before the start of any trip you take, to protect your personal information and important data of any other indispensible documents (passports, visas, Personal Ids, flight information, hotel reservations, etc.) by saving copies in your e-mail. This is truly helpful when anticipating any mishaps, loss of information, and even loss of luggage. It’s convenient to have at hand any passport numbers of yourself and those traveling under your supervision, as well as all your flight details in the event that they get lost and the information is necessary in order to recuperate them. Its quite easy to re-send yourself the information saved in your e-mails and in this way also totally possible to have it at hand at any point in time, anywhere in the world. 2. Saving important telephone numbers in your e-mail. So many times it happens that we’re carrying around agendas and planners that for some reason or another we can’t readily access when we actually need it and necessary. It would be so much easier to just avoid this whole situation, by taking note of important phone numbers and saving them in your e-mail. E-mails are accessbile from any public internet connection or even a mobile phone.
3. Verifying Internet access wherever we may be. The two steps above are easy and a given to achieve, if and when the places we visit have internet access without any restrictions of use. A way to find this out prior to any trip commitments, is to ask the travel agency or operator handling your arrangements. At that time you can also inquire as to whether cell phone usage (pre-paid is a good option) with access to the internet is provided at your destination point. 4. Visiting or meeting on-line Friends Among its many uses, the internet allows for the opportunity to get to know people from all over the globe that perhaps in other circumstances we would never have been able to meet. If we’re visiting a place where an on-line friend also happens to live (assuming that this someone is well known and trusted, of course), we could make double use of the trip by making plans to meet up with him or her, always trying to make sure to meet in a public place first. This would surely cement a friendship even more. Obviously asking them to let you stay in their home is probably not the best of ideas, but getting together, a quick visit or meet up for coffee or drinks could be quite nice!
We should definitely e-mail our closests friends and family members with a travel itinerary including flight information, hotel, lodging, and any other pertinent information about your travel plans. It is always good to have people close to you be aware of where you are, and it’s also helpful in case they need to locate you while you’re away in the event that you should need any help from them.
Even before reaching our destinations, we can use the internet to do a bit of research (Google Maps, Google Earth, Panoramio, etc) and familiarize ourselves with it. It’s easy to find information such as: tourist attractions, tours, information centers and hotels. Finding a website with customer and previous visitor reviews is a good way to gauge the best places to check out and visit. Usually you can get a good sense of the most popular tourist attractions this way too.
Attempting to store things while traveling could lead to several problems (loss of and deterioration of memories and souvenirs). But nowadays online we have a “storage cloud” called Cloud Computing, where we’re able to upload and then store all our photos and videos in a safe setting and without restrictions. Some recommended sites for storing your pictures are Picassa and Flickr. Opening an account with any of these sites will take you no more than five minutes. For video storing, there is of course, the omnipresent YouTube and Vimeo.
