Traveling alone, is one thing. Traveling with children, is a whole different story. There are many factors to keep in mind for parents that are traveling with children that perhaps when traveling alone do not come into play and are not that necessary. Children need special care and an adecuate environment that will make them feel at home during every trip.  Here we’ll go through some recommendations that should be  kept in mind when traveling with children in public trasnportation.

kids bus

In the first place, to avoid having to do so last minute, make sure at the moment you purchase your transportation arrangements that the seats assigned to the child are comfortable and adjoining yours. At the same time, it’s also good to ask if the mode of transport (bus, plane, train etc..) is at full capacity or if there will be some empty seats available. In the event of empty seats, it’s much more comfortable to travel and spread out with the extra space.

If we place children by the window seat, it gives them something to occupy themselves with during the trip and it also prevents them from continuously getting up from their seats. One thing is sure, there is nothing more tempting to a child than the corridor and aisles of a bus or plane! It’s also recommended to have some child friendly magazine at hand that can hold their interest, or a small toy to occupy their time.

It’s preferable to travel in the early morning hours or in contrast, during the late hours as this way the children’s characteristic energy level will be at its ebb as they would probably be either sleeping or about to fall asleep. It’s also better to board as one of the first passengers and to exit as one of the last. This way, the attendants are better able to assist you individually.

We should definitely be informed about the weather and temperature averages of the location or destination we’d be traveling to. Sensibility to climate is more pronounced in children and it would be helpful to be prepared with a jacket, blanket, or coat. It’s better to avoid and prevent than to regret afterwards…and it’s much much better to have an extra coat than to be needing one and not having it available.

Small Children

First and foremost, you should first check with your child’s pediatrician to see if traveling with your young child is advisable. Even better, if you’re able to get a quick routine check-up, just to be sure. If the doctor has the information available, being well informed on any necessary health regulations or precautions within the area you’d be traveling to, would be recommended.

Smaller children, are a different area altogether. The more effort you put into finding out all the safety precautions needed, the better. Once you have all this at hand, it’s easier to prepare the items and accesories needed and make sure that nothing is missing. Diapers, lotions, oils, baby food, toys, sunblock, hats, gloves, portable seating,  no “baby gadget” is too much to bring along. Music is also a nice element to have around. You might find that taking with you a small, portable radio equipped with the sounds that your child is used to, may be your saving grace from disastrous situations (read: a crying baby).

Bug and mosquito repellent, as well as any other basic medication that children normally use, are indispensable.  It also wouldn’t be a bad idea, to bring a first aid kit along with rubbing alcohol, antiseptics,  ointments for cuts and bruises, as well as  pain relief drops for stomach aches, fevers and antihistamines for allergies etc.

To prevent, is to to be fully stocked up on food and liquids for your child. This way, if you get stuck on the road in a traffic jam, or on a plane as sometimes is the case, you will always be prepared with enough food and drink for your child. They’ll appreciate it.
