Peruvian beaches are renowned for their biodiversity and for having some of the best scenic views for surfing. Though Peru’s north is the country’s beach haven, surprisingly, it is not the only ideal place for wave runners.

If time isn’t on your side and you can’t visit the surf cities La Libertad, Lambayeque, Piura, or Tumbes, then Lima’s Costa Verde’s beaches is were surfing turns into a form of art.

Learning to Surf in Makaha
Within Costa Verde, meaning the green coast, Makaha in the Miraflores district is the surf goer’s Mecca. The waves of Makaha tend to be larger than the region’s surrounding beaches and are thus a perfect introduction to the extreme sport. As a result of this, you’ll find Makahanan veterans and novices alike stretching and prepping themselves on the beachfront in the early hours of the day, as they’ll take on the Miraflorina Sea.

Intro to Surfing

Surfers-to-be gather themselves into schools that are taught by world- renowned surfers like Carlos “Chalo” Espejo and “Magoo” de la Rosa who both holds the 2007 ISA World Grand Master Championship title and was a pioneer of the sport. To date, Magoo continually adds members to his surfer’s club, which is actually a skillfully intimidating bunch when you share waves with them.

If you’re set on staying in Lima and Lima only but wish to still experience the raw power and excitement of Makaha (named after a Hawaiian beach because of their similarities), then consider looking into tourist agencies that specialize in adventurous activities like Viva Travel Guides. Viva Travel Guides supplies people with the basic necessities of surfers and also arrange surf classes with experts like Chalo and Magoo in the Lukana Surfing School.

As aforementioned, Lukana Surfing School gives visitors the supplies needed to surf like the board, wax, and the wetsuit. Aside from the basic needs, the school works with the surfing pupil’s schedule by offering personalized classes from Monday to Sunday with various sessions between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The two hour long lessons, with an additional half-hour warm up, would-be surfers learn to simulate surfing on land, are taught basic yoga positions suited for surfing, and are taken into the open waters. After getting the hang of it, the new surfers are treated to the newfound glory knowing how to tame and ride the waves.

Just Some Suggestions

Makaha for the most part is a rocky beach. Wear sandals that can take a beating from pebbles and rocks, and watch your steps. In the fall and winter months of Peru (from March to September), make sure to wear sunscreen.
